Buying meat is a tricky affair. You need to make sure that you get the best quality cut with the right taste and tenderness. When looking for the right meat, you need to consider the source of the meat. Good quality meat should be reared in a good environment.

Buying meat that has been reared by local families is always a good option to support the local communities. It is also essential to check the way the meat is handled to make sure that hygiene is considered. Here is a guide on buying good quality meat:

Color

Checking the color can tell you whether you are buying good quality meat. It is essential to make sure that you are buying fresh meat just by checking the color.

Fresh beef will always be dark or cherry red, and this is an indicator of freshness. When you encounter black meat, it is more than likely that the meat is no longer in good condition, and so you should not buy it.

Meat Grading

Meat grading is not something that everyone can understand. It is an expert classification of determining good quality meat. There are basic guidelines for grading meat. Prime is the highest quality of meat, followed by choice, select, and standard.

However, we have other classification under that like commercial, utility, and canner. You need to buy meat depending on how you are planning to use it. Canner is used for canning purposes, and it tends to be lower quality meat.

Fat Content

People tend to prefer lean meat without any fat. However, this is not the right way to buy meat. When buying meat, it is essential to choose a steak with some fat content.

The perfect steak should have a marble look. Some streaks of color here and there can be crucial in providing you the fat that you need. Unlike popular belief, fat content is still essential. Do not buy lean meat, but at the same time, make sure that you do not buy extremely fatty meat. A good chunk of meat should have that marble look on the surface.

Type Of Cut

It is also essential to determine the type of cut that you want when buying meat. If you’re going to do fry the meat in a pan, then you might want to choose a steak that is easy to cook.
